LMI to Support DoD Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation Scholarship for Service Program

DoD Smart

Tysons, VA, December 19, 2017 — LMI will support the Department of Defense (DoD) Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program in a cooperative agreement with the Research Directorate under the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering (OASD[R&E]). The program’s total value of $235 million will be distributed between LMI’s operating costs of around $26 million and the program scholars’ tuition and stipend payments over a period of 5 years. LMI expects to complete this work in October 2022.

“We’re honored to support the SMART scholarship program to ensure that DoD can meet its current and future workforce needs,” said LMI’s CEO and president, Dave Zolet. “This partnership highlights LMI’s unique ability to support complex government programs by bringing together multiple capabilities to create innovative solutions for our customers.”

DoD established the SMART Scholarship for Service Program to furnish academic funding to undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students who have demonstrated ability and excellence in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. Students accepted into the program must complete a period of full-time employment at a DoD facility to further their work and research in a civil service role. This increases the amount of highly qualified civilian candidates in STEM positons within DoD.

“This is a massive program for LMI and a huge opportunity to provide support in a highly collaborative environment,” said Shaye Brotherton, program support manager for the SMART project in LMI’s Organizational and Human Capital Solutions group.

“We are partnering with a series of stakeholders across the board, working with over 230 universities and 150 facilities across DoD, and supporting over 1,000 Phase I and II students in different stages of the program. The breadth of support we provide across all facets of the program is incredible.”

The LMI team will support multiple elements of the program, including program administration, SMART Information Management System database integration and updates, marketing and outreach support, and disbursing and tracking of scholarship and program funds.
