Recognition for excellence in the company’s security program.
MCLEAN, Va., June 27, 2007—The Defense Security Service has awarded LMI the 2007 James S. Cogswell Outstanding Industrial Security Achievement Award, presented for extraordinary accomplishment in facility security. Adm. Donald L. Pilling, CEO of LMI, said, “LMI is honored to receive this award, and it shows the level of commitment of all employees at LMI to maintaining high standards of security awareness.” The annual Cogswell Award is the most prestigious honor DSS can bestow on a cleared facility: of the 13,000 cleared contractors eligible, only 30 received it this year.
Established in 1966, the award honors the late Air Force Col. James S. Cogswell, the first chief of the unified office of Industrial Security in the Department of Defense. Col. Cogswell was responsible for developing the basic principles of the industrial security program, which emphasize the partnership between industry and government in protecting classified information. Award criteria focus on indicators of industrial security excellence, which include establishing and maintaining a security program that far exceeds basic National Industrial Security Program requirements and offering leadership to other cleared facilities by setting exacting standards for security.
To receive the Cogswell award, a facility must be nominated by its assigned industrial security representative, have a superior industrial security review rating for two consecutive years, and show a sustained degree of excellence and innovation in its overall security program management, implementation and oversight. Mr. Rick Esslinger, manager of corporate security, affirmed, “The LMI security department works hard to ensure compliance with the NISPOM [‘National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual’].LMI management and staff have made the Cogswell presentation possible with their dedication to excellence.” LMI is a not-for-profit government consulting firm established in 1961 at the behest of Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara. Best known for its logistics expertise, LMI’s work now includes acquisition, facilities management, financial management, information technology, and organizations and human capital. Numbered among its clients are Department of Defense organizations and civil agencies, such as the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Postal Service. |
