NEWSLMI and World Resources Institute Partner on Greenhouse Gas Accounting Guidance for Public Agencies
McLean, Va., June 24, 2008 — LMI has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the World Resources Institute (WRI) to create and publish a public agency supplement to the greenhouse gas (GHG) Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard, which was jointly developed by WRI and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. Increasing concern over climate change has led legislators and public agency managers to begin addressing emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Key components of any greenhouse gas mitigation program include reliable GHG accounting methods and procedures. The private sector has already developed GHG accounting protocols, but they do not address the nuances of operations in the public sector, including federal agencies. Through this project, LMI and WRI will address issues specific to the public sector to ensure consistent and valid GHG emissions inventories. With reliable inventories, public agencies can confidently measure their efforts to reduce their GHG emissions.
"LMI is excited to partner with WRI on this effort to set a GHG accounting standard for federal agencies," said LMI Vice President Dr. William B. Moore. "LMI's hope is that agencies will use this guidance to develop their own accounting programs for GHG emissions. LMI has initiated a stakeholder process and welcomes input from federal, regional, state and local officials on their GHG programs." Added Moore, "This is an excellent example of LMI using its internal independent research and development (IR&D) funds to advance the science of government management."
Pankaj Bhatia, director of the GHG Protocol Initiative at WRI, said "Public agencies contribute significantly to the nation's GHG footprint, but they lack targeted tools for GHG management. WRI is excited to assist LMI in building capacity amongst agencies for GHG accounting and management."
