Stryker combat vehicle exits the tail of a C-130 aircraftImproving Army Readiness with Stronger Prepositioning

To allow the military to more rapidly respond to conflicts, DoD has increased its reliance on prepositioned stocks of military equipment and supplies stored on land and at sea. Immediately deployed troops draw on prepositioned equipment and supplies to move quickly into combat as was done with Operation Iraqi Freedom.

We helped revise the Army’s prepositioning strategies and programs to address the emerging global geopolitical environment and threat analyses. Working closely with commanders and staffs in the United States, Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanistan, Qatar, and Korea, we prepared an updated strategy for future prepositioning, focusing on new command and control arrangements, the type and amount of equipment to be prepositioned, and potential new and altered prepositioning locations. The Army is currently implementing our recommended strategy to strengthen its ability to address shortfalls, modernize remaining stocks, establish sound requirements for supporting joint expeditionary forces, respond to emerging requirements, and deploy forces more efficiently and quickly in response to the global war on terrorism.
