Increasing Interoperability Through Standardization.INCREASING INTEROPERBILITY THROUGH STANDARDIZATION

Standardization is a key requirement for increasing weapon system and operational interoperability, reducing the total cost of ownership, and enhancing readiness sustainment. LMI helped the Defense Standardization Program Office move toward achieving these objectives, creating a significant body of processes, products, and services for use by warfighters and the acquisition and logistics communities. Our work has led to the identification and compilation of thousands of international standardization agreements, standards, and specifications. Through the use of an online tool, program managers can access and use those resources in developing and executing NATO and other international agreements.

In another project, we are restoring the concept of parts management—reinstating it as a contractual requirement, revitalizing it as a systems engineering discipline, and making critical parts data available through a knowledge-sharing portal. In a third initiative, we are working with the aerospace and microcircuit industries to mitigate the declining ability of commercial microcircuits to meet DoD requirements. This effort has resulted in the development of an international standard for aerospace-qualified electronic components, significantly improving DoD’s ability to obtain needed components in the future.
