CLIENTS AND SOLUTIONS

Army—Integrating Environmental Support

The Army headquarters environmental program leadership wanted to move the Army into a new strategy that focuses on long-term sustainability of lands and other resources entrusted to the department to support training, testing, and operations. LMI has worked closely with the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Environment, Safety and Occupational Health; Director, Environmental Division, Installation Support Directorate, Office of the Assistant Chief of Staff for Installation Management; Director, Army Environmental Policy Institute; and Director, Installation Support Office, Army Environmental Command, on implementation, planning, and analysis of future program and budget needs to meet the Army Strategy for the Environment, sustainability planning, and annual reporting. We have supported Army headquarters for more than 15 years with focused research, policy development, and analysis of trends and budget requirements.

CBP—Securing America's Borders

Customs and Border Protection has launched the Secure Border Initiative (SBI), a comprehensive multiyear plan to secure America’s borders and reduce illegal migration. LMI is assisting the SBI Project Management Office and the Office of Finance and Asset Management with complying with environmental planning statutes and regulations relative to tactical infrastructure (such as fencing, roads, and lights) and facilities. LMI is managing and assisting with the preparation and review of National Environmental Policy Act documents, including categorical exclusions, environmental assessments, environmental impact statements, records of environmental consideration, and supporting studies and reports.

DHS—Improving Chem-Bio Early Detection

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Chem-Bio Early Detection Program Executive selected LMI as part of a team to support this critical program in the nation’s chemical and biological security mission. LMI provides expertise in public health interpretation and response systems, integrated logistics management, and quality assurance. The support team was recognized as the outstanding DHS program support contractor for fiscal year 2005.

DESC—Evaluating Hydrogen as Defense Fuel

Congress asked the Defense Energy Support Center (DESC) to evaluate the potential use of hydrogen as a defense fuel of the future. LMI helped DESC evaluate the state of hydrogen fuel development and analyzed the potential uses and timetable for global adoption of hydrogen as primary fuel. We supported DESC managers in the presentation of study results to congressional staff members and continue to support DESC as it looks at alternative future fuels.

USPS—Enhancing Personnel Safety and Health

LMI’s environment, safety, and occupational health (ESOH) experts have been working closely with the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) to enhance the safety and health of USPS personnel and protect postal facilities’ environment for over a decade. Our functional ESOH staff, working closely with our information management experts, have helped the USPS develop, deploy, and enhance a safety management system nationwide. We have helped train more than 700 USPS safety personnel in the use of hand-held tools for efficiently conducting inspections and safety program evaluations, greatly improving safety performance: injury and illness rates have been cut in half since we started supporting USPS. During and after the anthrax attacks, our experts worked alongside USPS managers on the response and recovery from the unprecedented health threats and associated environmental and business risks resulting from the incidents. We continue to support mitigation and preparedness efforts with training, technical advice, and management support to protect the USPS workforce from the next emergency or disaster.

IMF—Crafting a Comprehensive HSE Management System

When the International Monetary Fund (IMF) wanted a comprehensive health, safety, and environmental (HSE) management system, it turned to LMI. To help the IMF prioritize its HSE aspects, we developed custom tools for risk assessments, program gap assessments, stakeholder priorities, peer benchmarking, and cost-benefit analyses to help identify HSE program priorities. We then worked with IMF managers to craft an ISO 14000-based management system, focusing on the HSE priorities identified earlier. As the IMF looks to the future, LMI continues to assist with program development strategies, information technology planning, and HSE program management support.
