CLIENTS AND SOLUTIONS

DoD—Cannibalization Increases Mission-Capable Rates

Asked by the Department of Defense to analyze the impact of cannibalization—the selective removal of serviceable parts from inoperable weapon systems to make others operable—we found effective use of cannibalization activity can increase weapon system mission-capable rates more than 17 percent and cost less than 1 percent of the alternative, buying additional spares. As a result, DoD modified its maintenance and supply policies to improve its management of cannibalization actions.

DLA—Apparel Research Network

The Defense Logistics Agency’s Apparel Research Network has been developing supply chain improvements for military clothing since 1996. Among the program’s notable achievements are 3-D body scanning at recruit centers, coordination of retail and wholesale inventory management, and visibility of manufacturers’ in-process inventory. LMI has supported this effort from the beginning by characterizing the business environment, evaluating research proposals, and providing business case analyses.

U.S. Army—Investments Bolster Force Projection

For more than 15 years, LMI has helped formulate and execute programs for rapidly deploying military forces to overseas theaters. Our work has been the foundation for Army decisions on a wide range of critical issues: modernization of infrastructure at bases and ports, design of sealift vessels, and overseas prepositioning of equipment—all factors that contributed to the speed and precision of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
