Washingtonian Magazine Chooses LMI as a “Great Place to Work”

Lauded for Interesting Work and Quality of Life

McLean, Virginia, October 21, 2005 – Washingtonian magazine chose LMI as one of the fifty-five “great places to work” in Washington because of its “interesting and challenging work, good pay and benefits, collegial staff, stability, flexibility, and employee development.” The magazine reviewed more than 225 companies in the Washington, DC, area in making its selection.

Washingtonian solicits nominations on its website and in various trade publications. Companies interested in being evaluated complete a questionnaire covering work-life policies, employee development, diversity, philanthropy, and other topics relating to the company’s work atmosphere. Washingtonian staff members then visit each company to check it out on-site, interviewing employees and managers.

LMI is a not-for-profit government consulting firm established in 1961 at the behest of Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara. He urged President Kennedy to establish LMI to provide analytical support and analyses to the Office of the Secretary of Defense. While most known for its work in logistics, today LMI works extensively for civil agencies, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Department of Defense. Its work areas have expanded to include acquisition, facilities management, financial management, information technology, and organizations and human capital.

LMI ensures the quality of its work by hiring and retaining educated, dedicated, and experienced staff members. Its emphasis is on motivating the staff, stressing the importance of continued professional development, and stimulating innovative thinking. See the Careers section for more details.

One source of innovation at LMI is the LMI Research Institute (LRI), established to build on its long-standing IR&D program for improving federal government management. The LRI sponsors The Public Manager, a quarterly journal, which has served for over 30 years as a forum for exchanging ideas and new approaches to improving management of the public sector. The Bureaucrat, Inc., a nonprofit and wholly owned affiliate of LMI, maintains editorial control of and publishes the journal under the sponsorship of the LRI.
