EVENTSTimothy Clark of Government Executive Magazine speaks to LMI staff Discusses challenges at the Department of Defense and Homeland Security
McLean, Virginia, March 8, 2006—Timothy Clark, Editor and President of Government Executive magazine, spoke to the LMI staff as part of the LMI Research Institute’s Distinguished Speaker program. He began with comments on how the current political and financial situation makes it difficult for the government to move forward on new initiatives. The remainder of his speech focused on today’s challenges at the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security. Mr. Clark cited the increasing cost of healthcare for the military and difficulty meeting recruiting goals as major challenges for DoD. Both will require increased funding, forcing DoD to make some tough allocation choices. Homeland Security is still trying to integrate the various agencies that combined to make up the new department, and it has had difficulty filling key positions, even with funding available. Mr. Clark noted that there is good news also, notably the progress in developing biometric screening for the border security program.
Timothy Clark, who has spent a career in journalism studying and writing about government, built Government Executive magazine into a key communications medium for senior federal leaders. A graduate of Harvard University, he went on to found Empire State Report, a monthly magazine about politics and government in New York. He is also a founder of National Journal, the preeminent weekly magazine on politics and government. He assumed his current position atGovernment Executive in 1987.
