EVENTSLMI to Dedicate Macfarlan Reading Room as Part of 45th Anniversary In Memory of W. Gregor Macfarlan, Expert on Government Procurement
McLean, Virginia, September 22, 2006—As LMI celebrates its 45th anniversary on October 5, 2006, it will take time to remember a friend who passed away last year. The Macfarlan Reading Room will be dedicated as part of the LMI Research Institute. The Reading Room contains the professional book collection of W. Gregor “Greg” Macfarlan, generously donated by his wife, Mrs. Winnie Macfarlan. LMI created this room as a retreat in memory of this outstanding individual, whose career and focus on education and training demonstrated his dedication to improving the acquisition profession.
Mr. Macfarlan was a senior research fellow at LMI and a member of the LMI Research Institute. He worked in the acquisition profession for more than 40 years and served at LMI from 1993 until his death in October 2005. His passing left a void in the field of federal acquisition workforce training, particularly in the area of teaching people how to prepare and use the performance-based contracts to which the federal government turned in the 1990s. Macfarlan was actively involved in the programs and operation of the National Contract Management Association (NCMA), the leading professional association in the procurement field. He served as the association’s national president, a fellow, and honorary life member and, in 1997, received its Charles A. Dana Distinguished Service Award.
LMI will celebrate Macfarlan’s many accomplishments in conjunction with its 45th anniversary. As a consulting company, LMI recognizes that its people are invaluable, and Greg Macfarlan was among the finest examples of its high caliber professionals. On October 5, the LMI officers will be joined by Macfarlan’s family, NCMA leadership, and several distinguished speakers—including Hon. Robert Hale, Executive Director of the American Society of Military Comptrollers; Ms. Deidre Lee, Deputy Director of Operations for the Federal Emergency Management Agency; and ADM (Ret.) Lenn Vincent, current NCMA President—to dedicate the Macfarlan Reading Room. LMI is a not-for-profit government consulting firm established in 1961 at the behest of Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara. Best known for its logistics expertise, LMI is dedicated to solving the federal government’s management challenges in acquisition, facilities management, financial management, information technology, and organizations and human capital, as well as logistics. Numbered among its clients are Department of Defense organizations and civil agencies, such as the General Services Administration and the Departments of Health and Human Services, Homeland Security, and Energy. LMI established the Research Institute in 2004 as a center of innovation that seeks to produce breakthrough ideas for advancing the science of government management. It strives to bring thoughtfulness, rigor, and greater predictability to all aspects of government decision making.
