ArchivesLMI Acquires The Bureaucrat, Inc. The Public Manager gets new publisher, retains editorial board
McLean, Virginia, December 1, 2004—LMI, a private, not-for-profit corporation dedicated to improving public-sector management, announced today that effective November 9, 2004, The Bureaucrat, Inc., and its quarterly journal, The Public Manager, became a wholly-owned affiliate of LMI. LMI also named Harry Featherstone as the journal's new publisher.
“LMI is committed to bringing the most advanced and creative solutions to bear on the myriad of challenges faced by government managers,” said Admiral Donald L. Pilling, president of LMI. “We believe this new relationship provides a tremendous vehicle to explore issues and provide public-sector managers with innovative yet practical answers to their day-to-day concerns. For more than 30 years, The Public Manager has been recognized as a superb source of professional expertise and indispensable advice. We plan to build that reputation and expand the journal’s exposure throughout the public sector.”
Under the new relationship, The Bureaucrat, Inc., will remain an independent entity, retain its current board of directors and officers, and maintain its responsibility for oversight for The Public Manager operations. The current editor-in-chief of The Public Manager, Warren Master (also The Bureaucrat, Inc., president), will retain editorial control and remain responsible for journal content.
LMI will assume responsibility for publication of The Public Manager, including oversight for its production, printing, and distribution. The new publisher will provide a full range of business, administrative, and publication functions.
“As a leading strategic consulting firm, LMI has helped government managers resolve critical issues for more than 40 years. Our new LMI Research Institute reflects our commitment to providing world-class, innovative, analytic rigor and breakthrough technical thinking and will serve as the sponsor for The Public Manager,” said Pilling. “We intend to work closely with the board of directors and editor-in-chief to advance The Public Manager’s already high standards, expand journal circulation, improve reader satisfaction, and reach out to public-sector practitioners, educators, and students,” said Harry Featherstone. “We view the new relationship as a tremendous opportunity to grow the journal, emphasize its relevance, and expand its impact throughout the practitioner community.”
The alliance plans to pursue relationships with both existing and new partners in hosting conferences, forums, and seminars, sharing best practice information, and stimulating new thinking on public management issues—periodically publishing the results of these exchanges in The Public Manager and on its Web site.
The Bureaucrat, Inc. is a not-for-profit corporation devoted to furthering knowledge and best practices at all levels of government through the publication of its practitioner journal, The Public Manager, and associated activities. It is dedicated to encouraging professionalism and high performance by public managers in federal, regional, state, and local government organizations, as well as consultants, students, and scholars interested in public management.
