LMI Celebrates National Volunteer Week with Rebuilding Together

LMI volunteers renovate homes for elderly in Falls Church

McLean, Virginia, May 5, 2004—LMI, a private, not-for-profit corporation dedicated to improving public-sector management, sponsored the renovation of two area homes for the Rebuilding Together program. More than 50 LMI employees, family, and friends donated their time on April 24–25 to renovate the houses of an elderly couple and a widower in Falls Church. LMI partnered with RPJ Housing and Rebuilding Together, organizations dedicated to improving the living conditions of owner-occupied low-income housing using volunteer labor.

For the past 2 years, LMI employees, family members, and friends have spent a spring weekend improving the homes of families in the community. This year, the LMI volunteers tackled home-improvement projects such as removing old kitchen cabinets and installing new ones, building a wheelchair ramp, rebuilding the back porch and staircase, repainting the interior of the house, renovating the bathroom, and removing old carpeting to expose the hardwood floors. Volunteers also cleaned up the lawn around this house and another in the neighborhood.

“The LMI family consists of people who genuinely care about their community, proving their commitment to volunteerism by participating in a number of service projects every year,” said Admiral Don Pilling, president and chief executive officer at LMI. “Our involvement with Rebuilding Together exemplifies the selflessness of our employees, who are willing to give up their weekends to engage in intensive manual labor that will benefit a local underprivileged family.”

Many volunteers had a chance to visit with the elderly couple, who have lived in the same house since 1953. At age 90, the gentleman was in the thick of things, doing everything he could to help the volunteers. His wife spent the day under a beautiful old tree, chatting with volunteers and inviting passersby to her sidewalk sale.
