newsThe Honorable Douglas Bereuter Joins LMI Board Adds valuable leadership and counsel to Board of Trustees
McLean, Virginia, June 3, 2005—Douglas Bereuter, president of The Asia Foundation since September 2004 and former U.S. Representative from Nebraska, joined LMI’s Board of Trustees.
In his 26 years in the U.S. House of Representatives, Mr. Bereuter held many influential positions. They included vice chairman of the House International Relations Committee for 6 years, during which he also chaired the Asia-Pacific Subcommittee. He served on the House Financial Services Committee for 23 years, chaired the House Delegation to the 40-country NATO Parliamentary Assembly, and was the founding co-chairman of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China. His legislative accomplishments were equally impressive: co-authoring the Bereuter-Levin Amendment, which eventually led to passage of the act granting Permanent Normal Trading Relations for China; helping launch the USAID Farmers-to-Farmers technical assistance program; and initiating a home loan guarantee program, among many others.
Mr. Bereuter graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Nebraska and has master’s degrees from Harvard University in both city planning and public administration. He also has received the Kennedy School’s Outstanding Alumni Award, along with decorations from the governments of Bulgaria, Lithuania, and Romania. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, World Affairs Council of Northern California, and Pacific Council on International Policy. According to Admiral Don Pilling, USN (Retired), CEO and president of LMI, “Mr. Bereuter will be a valuable addition to our Board; LMI will benefit greatly from his counsel and leadership. We are looking forward to a long and successful relationship.”
