EVENTSGovernor Mark R. Warner to Speak to LMI Staff Will Offer Insights into Managing a State Government
McLean, Virginia, September 27, 2005—On October 4, 2005, Governor Mark R. Warner (D) will speak to the LMI staff as part of the LMI Research Institute’s Distinguished Speaker series. In his speech, Governor Warner will share some of his insights into running the State of Virginia.
Governor Warner became Virginia’s 69th governor in January 2002. In his campaign for election and subsequent management of Virginia’s day-to-day operations, Governor Warner stressed his business background. In 2004, Governing magazine named him one of the "Public Officials of the Year."That same magazine also recognized Virginia as the only state in the country to earn straight As in fiscal management in 2005.
Before being elected, Governor Warner had a very successful business career in venture capital, funding innovative ideas, (such as Nextel Communications and XM Satellite Radio) and creating jobs throughout Virginia and the nation.He helped start more than 50 businesses that have grown to employ more than 15,000 workers. He also helped create the Virginia Health Care Foundation, which has provided health care to more than 476,000 underserved Virginians in rural and urban areas; TechRiders, an innovative program that has taught basic computer skills to more than 16,000 participant who were not exposed to them in their schools and homes; and the Virginia High-Tech Partnership, which helps students from Virginia's five Historically Black Colleges and Universities pursue technology careers through a summer internship and job placement program from which LMI actively recruits.
Governor Warner has a bachelor’s degree from George Washington University and a Juris Doctorate from Harvard University.
