NEWSDr. Canes Speaks at CRS Seminar
Williamsburg, VA, January 13, 2009—Dr. Michael Canes, one of LMI’s Senior Research Fellows, represented the LMI Research Institute at a seminar in Williamsburg, VA. The seminar, “Legislative Issues and Procedures: The CRS Seminar for New Members,” was sponsored by the Congressional Research Service and acquaints new members of Congress with many of the issues they will face when in office. Dr. Canes spoke on climate change policy. He argued that when contemplating policy actions to deal with carbon in the atmosphere, Congress should consider a carbon tax instead of a cap and trade approach. Dr. Canes has published extensively on carbon taxes versus cap and trade approaches under the auspices of two Washington, D.C. think tanks: the George C. Marshall Institute and the Energy Policy Research Foundation, Inc. Other participants in Dr. Canes’ session at the seminar included Professor Robert Stavins, Harvard University, and Mr. Brent Yacobucci, Congressional Research Service.
