LMI’s Minority Ethnicities affinity group hosted the event “Where do we go from here?” as part of its Distinguished Speakers Series on January 19, 2021. In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, guest speaker Michael Black, chief operating officer at Concise Network Solutions and a retired U.S. Air Force Colonel, discussed the importance of diversity and inclusion, public service, and effective leadership.
Col. Black described the evolution of diversity and inclusion concepts, exemplifying President Biden’s commitment to assembling a cabinet of qualified and diverse members as the way forward. He said organizations must instill the message and be deliberate in the planning of a diverse and inclusive culture.
As a servant leader, Col. Black believes in putting the needs of employees first. He highlighted professional development and mentoring opportunities as ways to expose young professionals to experiences they can load in their “virtual toolbox” and reference throughout their careers.
