Over the last 40 years, the U.S. has experienced over 270 major climate and extreme weather events with losses exceeding $1.7 Trillion (NOAA, 2020). As the frequency, intensity, and costs of these environmental disasters are projected to continue to increase, the federal financial and risk management communities have a critical role to play in accounting, disclosing, and budgeting to reduce the federal government’s fiscal exposure from the asset to portfolio level.
