Dr. Shanmuga Sozhamannan oversees LMI’s technical resources in the development, fielding, and sustaining of reagents, assays, and biothreat detection systems for the warfighter. He serves as the key interface between service laboratories, quality assurance test laboratories, and product end users while maintaining positive government, industry, and interagency partnerships. He brings diverse and extensive experience working in academia, private industry, and government laboratories.
Shanmuga joined LMI in 2019 from The Tauri Group. He supports the Defense Biological Product Assurance Office’s Joint Program Executive Office (JPEO) as a technical coordinator. Prior to JPEO, he led a genomics lab at the Naval Medical Research Center and Intralytix, Inc., where he was a molecular biology lead, developing phage-based products for combating bacterial pathogens, such as listeria and salmonella, in ready-to-eat food products.
Shanmuga obtained his bachelor’s and master’s in botany from Madras University and also holds a master’s and doctorate of philosophy from Madurai Kamaraj University. His doctoral work was on microbial genetics and molecular biology. He performed postdoctoral work at the French National Institute for Agricultural Research and at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
He has published over 70 peer-reviewed, scientific publications and several book chapters. He holds several national and international patents. Over the years, his research focused on bacterial and bacteriophage genetics, molecular aspects of pathogenesis, and creating phage-based and molecular diagnostic assays and therapeutics. He also used next-generation sequencing technologies for various applications, ranging from pathogen detection and characterization to development of phage genomics–based therapeutics.
Shanmuga has received prestigious fellowships for his postdoctoral work in France and at NIH. He has written research proposals and obtained research funding from various private and government agencies.
