Tysons, Va. – LMI has joined MxD, one of 14 national institutes sponsored by the federal government to strengthen American manufacturing competitiveness. MxD, which stands for “manufacturing times digital,” has roughly 300 industry and academic members participating in joint R&D initiatives to modernize manufacturing through advancements in digital engineering, cybersecurity, and supply chain resiliency.

“Joining MxD reflects LMI’s commitment to industry leadership in technical data expertise and technologies that support a model-based enterprise and digital thread,” said Michelle Kordell, LMI’s director of acquisition and lifecycle logistics and its Technical DNA™ services. “LMI has helped the Department of Defense explore and harness these capabilities with transformative results, improving readiness while lowering costs. Through MxD, LMI hopes to engage a diverse cross section of manufacturers, collaborate in research and problem-solving, and share lessons from leveraging model-based technical data for defense sustainment.”

Formerly the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute, MxD is sponsored by the Department of Defense with an expressed focus on “the military’s most challenging manufacturing problems while also serving as a central hub for data on the sector’s competitiveness,” according to the MxD website.

MxD government engagement manager Mike Yucuis said, “We are pleased to add LMI’s expertise and defense sector experience to the MxD network. LMI offers practical understanding of digital engineering concepts that can inform the small- and medium-sized firms that are critical to a secure, resilient, and efficient supply chain."

In addition to MxD, LMI actively participates in and lends thought leadership to the Joint Defense Manufacturing Technology Panel and its Advanced Manufacturing Enterprise subpanel, the Defense Manufacturing Conference, and the Model-Based Enterprise Summit hosted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

“MxD membership is another example of how LMI champions a modern digital enterprise, leveraging government and industry technical data to implement and scale the technologies that take digital engineering to the next level,” Kordell said.
